“My wife and I travelled to France in July and August 2014 where we were fortunate to visit some amazing vineyards. We were hosted at a number of fantastic domaines including Domaine Pierre Amiot et Fils. We drove around to so many vineyards I lost count! We also rode our bikes around some of the vineyards which was great, always good to get out in the open!
We also had the opportunity to explore the region by car, below is a picture of me just outside the vineyards of Bouchard Père et Fils Le Montrachet…spectacular!! I managed to find a homeless grape and tested it, I could tell then that it was going to be a good vintage!
No doubt the severe hail storms in June 2014 would have scared many vignerons into thinking this vintage could be ruined. But thankfully the dry and sunny September with a cooling north wind helped salvage the vintage, for those vines that survived! They say the coolness of July and August following the hail storms helped to keep the high acidity and freshness in the wines. We agree with what Didier Seguier, head winemaker at William Fèvre, says in the latest issue of Gourmet Traveller Wine, ‘If people don’t like acidity, they won’t like the 2014s.’ Tim Atkin MW adds that the reds ‘are delicious now, but will age reasonably well too.’
We can’t wait to try them now and in a few more years too!”
