American Beer for an American holiday
The Swanbourne Cellars world of beer has been a very exciting world of late. Lots of new stock has made its way into the warehouse from the U.S, our panel of self described ‘beer experts’ made their way through an extraordinary amount of dark beer and we have plenty on the horizon in the way of in-store tastings and promos.
July the 4th is upon us and we have a brand new shipment of American beer for our customers to celebrate with. Whilst old favourites Sierra Nevada, Founders and Rogue are still going strong, we encourage you to try some of our new brews from Brooklyn Brewery and North Coast. Some of our favourites include…
Brooklyn Lager Cans, $5 per can ($55 per dozen): This Vienna Lager style gets us every time. Slighter darker (copper) in colour yet still light bodied, this crisp, clean beer is very complex. Citrusy late hops are combined with a lovely malt sweetness and soft bitterness to make this a complete ‘session’ beer.
Brooklyn East I.P.A Cans, $6 per can ($30 per 6 pack): A golden hued IPA with a little more body and ABV (6.9%). Expect more of an assault on the senses here with loads of fresh fruit (citrus, tropical), honey, spice and a sweet caramel malt tone. Well balanced with moderate bitterness.
Brooklyn Monster Ale (Barley Wine), $10 per bottle ($32 for a 4 pack): Monster by name and nature here as this Barley Wine comes in at 10.8% ABV. Lots of sweet stone fruit, burnt toffee and spice here carried a long way by the warming alcohol and finished with a zing of hoppy bitterness. One to sip and savour or share with a friend. The fine people at Brooklyn say it pairs pretty well with a cigar!
Brooklyn Sorachi Ace Saison, $24 per bottle, 750ml: We love Saison at Swanbourne Cellars and this one is as good as they get. Expect lemon, hay, Belgian yeast, spice and a light bready malt. Great body and carbonation on this thanks to the bottle fermentation with Champagne yeast. This is a must for your next dinner party. Super cool packaging too.
North Coast Le Merle Saison, $9 per bottle or $30 for a 4 pack: Another great Saison here exhibiting lots of citrus, tropical, coriander, banana and funky yeast with a hoppy yet bone dry finish. This is a fuller bodied representation of the style which pairs really well with spicy curries.
North Coast Brother Thelonius Belgian Strong Ale, $10 per bottle ($34 for a 4 pack): Named after the Jazz icon, this take on a Belgian strong ale has lots of dark fruit, nuts, liquorice, spice and a warming finish full of brown sugar and earthy funk. Pour this into a big glass after dinner, turn up the jazz and sip slowly.
