Hahndorf Hill Winery
Hahndorf Hill Winery is located a few minutes drive from the town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. It is owned by Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson who both emigrated to Australia in 1997.
Austrian grape varieties
Larry and Marc run this award winning winery and are pioneers in growing Austrian grape varieties of St Laurent, Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt and Grüner Veltliner. The winery also grows well-known varietals; Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Shiraz. There are three different soil types here in the Adelaide Hills; slate, flint and quartz which means it can accommodate a range of varieties.
The winery believes in minimal impact on the environment and therefore the vineyard is farmed according to environmentally sustainable methods. The elevation of the hills means the grapes are able to ripen slowly in the cool-climate of warm days and cold nights.
Award winning winery
The winery has won numerous awards both for its wine and the winery itself.
At the Adelaide Hills Wine Show 2016, Hahndorf Winery was awarded Best Producer – (<100 tonnes).
Earlier this year, Gourmet Traveller Wine awarded the Hahndorf Hill cellar door as one of Australia’s Best Cellar Doors for 2018 for the ‘Best Tasting Experience’ in the Adelaide Hills.
With their six hectares Hahndorf Hill is known for pioneering Austrian grape varieties in the Adelaide Hills wine region and this has been highly regarded by many wine writers such as James Halliday. In his Wine Companion, James states; “2010 marked the first release of a South Australian gruner veltliner and Hahndorf Hill has led the way ever since.”
As well as wine tastings at the cellar door, chocolate tastings with wines to match are offered. With views over the vineyard from the elevated tasting room, it is a delight to be able to visit and enjoy the experience.
We hope you’re able to visit soon!
