Langmeil winery and its wines

Named after the second German Lutheran village in the Barossa, Langmeil winery is home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest surviving Shiraz vineyard, The Freedom 1843.

Brief history of vines at Langmeil

After establishing his blacksmith shop and the village’s first trading area, the vineyard was planted by Christian Auricht, one of just 12 families in the village, as part of his mixed farm. From humble origins based on fortified wines, today Langmeil produces whites and reds (Riesling, Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mataro, Malbec, Sangiovese and Barbera).

1843 Shiraz Vines

Ruth, our Roaming Reporter headed to the Barossa and saw first-hand these vineyards that produce the wines for the Freedom 1843 Shiraz. Each vine, planted in 1843, only makes one bottle of wine with the yield at 1 ton per acre.

Thank you to Jonathan, Cellar Door Manager, for his time and the opportunity to taste the 2016 The Freedom 1843 Shiraz. The wine is exceptional with amazing length and fruit structure.

The Freedom Cellar

The Freedom Cellar, at the cellar door, where they hold personalised tastings of wines made from some of the oldest vineyards is impressive. It was originally the Cobbler’s shop which has been meticulously restored over the years.

The photo does not do the underground cellar justice and it is well worth a visit – bookings required.
More information about the history of Langmeil and the family run winery is on the Langmeil website.
