Owen Latta is only 34 years young yet he has been making wine since he was 15. His dad is a winemaker and at the time had an accident during harvest so Owen took over with his guidance.
Eastern Peake and Latta Vino
Owen’s parents had planted the vines during the 1980’s focused on Chardonnays and Pinots. The vineyard is in Coghills Creek, about 150 km north west of Melbourne and 24 km north of the town of Ballarat. The Lattas initially supplied Mount Langi and then in the early 1990’s started Eastern Peake range which is their premium range.
After finishing school Owen headed off to study at Charles Sturt University and came back home to work in the vineyard. There are two labels; Eastern Peake and Latta Vino, both of which involve minimal intervention. Eastern Peake was Awarded Australia’s Best Cellar Door Awards 2018 for Best Tasting Experience.
The Latta Vino is Owen’s own range with no additives and made with grapes grown from neighbouring vineyards that are run by relatives and family friends.
Based in Ballarat, Victoria, Owen is turning heads and helping put Ballarat on the map! And no doubt being awarded the 2018 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year will help!
More information about the wines and Owen have been written up by Mike Bennie here on the Gourmet Traveller Wine website.
