Stef’s rosé recommendations

We know how popular rosé was for our customers last summer and we are starting to see increased sales in the store already. This article  published last December highlights with facts and figures how Australian are choosing more rosé as their drink of choice. It goes on to state that the category is growing nationwide at more than 65 per cent in value and more than 53 per cent in volume in the past year (figures sourced from liquor industry sales data).

And interesting to note that it is not just women who are drinking more rosé …but more men too, with the adoption of the word “brosé”. At Swanny Cellars, we believe this summer this trend will continue. Customers are looking for different styles of rosés and looking rosés that have the fruit, the acidity and structure; all well balanced.

There are two main ways to make rosé wine; the maceration or saignée method and blending finished white wine and red wine together.

Saignée means ‘bled’ in French. The saignée method involves leaving the grapes and juice contact with each other (after crushing); up to 8 or 12 hours (in particular for Grenache grapes) in order to allow the pigment from the red grape skins to seep out. This short maceration period avoids the harsh tannic flavours and the deeper colour that come from long skin contact.

French Rosés


Rhône Valley Rosé

La Vielle Ferme Rosé 2017: Sourced from the Rhône Valley, this is a blend of typical southern Rhône grape varieties; Cinsault, La Vieille Ferme RoséGrenache and 20% Syrah. Made by the Perrin family in Ventoux, Rhône Valley, it was featured in the summer issue of On the Vine. Rod describes it as; “Pale pomegranate in colour, the attractive youngster has wild floral notes along with cherry and Turkish delight characters. It is dry and cleansing, a lovely drink with light Asian cuisine.”


Provence Rosés

Triennes Rosé: The cellar door is about 50 km south east of the city Aix-en-Provence. The grapes are picked at night in order for them to be at a cool temperature when they arrive at the winery and they remain on skins and are pressed for just a few hours which gives the light blush tint in the wine. The grape varieties are mainly Cinsault blended with Grenache, Syrah and Merlot. This is featured in the Summer issue of On the Vine.

Rimauresq Cru Classé, A.O.P. Côtes de Provence: Situated about 95 km south east of Aix-en-Provence, this Côtes de Provence vineyard was awarded Cru Classé status in 1955. This has been a popular rosé for a number of years and we have just received the 2017 vintage which is tasting lively and fresh. The grape varieties In this rosé are Grenache Noir (45%), Cinsault (29%), Syrah (6%), Mourvèdre (10%) as well as Carignan (4%), Ugni blanc (1%) and Rolle (5%)

Aix RoséAIX Rosé is another favourite from Provence and comes in three different bottle sizes. Highlighted in the Autumn issue of On the Vine Rod describes the wines as “The handsome minimalist presentation of this rosé wine hits the right buttons, the light salmon colour is attractive and the palate is just what you expect – long, dry, refreshing, crisp and with loads of personality. Drink this any time during the day and especially with light meats and salad at lunch. Available in a range of bottle sizes for your convenience.”


Italian Rosé

Santa Cristina Rosato, Toscana (It), 2016: This wine was a highlight of the Panel and was featured in the winter issue of On the Vine.“A rosé from Tuscany – a rarity at our panel Santa Cristina Roséand this is a ripper”, says Rod. “It’s a light blushing colour and has a little spritz or fizz, which indicates freshness. You’ll notice floral and red berry aromatics and the palate is light, long and strikingly attractive with just a touch of grape sugar. Screw capped! Quaff soon.”


Australian Rosés


McLaren Vale, South Australia

S.C. Pannell ‘Arido’ Grenache Rosé, McLaren Vale, 2017: S.C. Pannell has won numerous awards for his wines. Based in McLaren Vale the cellar door now boasts beautiful views overlooking the vineyards below, a wide deck perfect for dining not to mention a long tasting counter indoors where knowledgeable staff are more than happy to take you through the range.

SC Pannell Arido RoséThis wine is made from 100% Grenache. Featured in the winter issue of On the Vine, Rod adds, “When Steve Pannell gets his hands on grenache the stars align and this has a bundle of flavour with blood orange and melon, it’s sweet and sour with a little grape sugar and tart acidity. Loads of fun, try it chilled with a Cantonese stir-fry.”



Ulithorne Epoch Rosé 2018 is brand new into Swanny Cellars. Fresh and straight from McLaren Vale in South Australia, this is 100% Grenache. The grapes were partially crushed and only had two hours of skin contact with some whole bunches before gentle pressing. Then, unique for a rosé, this wine was transferred to 5-year-old French oak barrels with some solids for a long, cool fermentation. There followed regular lees stirring in barrel for three months then racking, stabilisation and bottling.



Barossa Valley, South Australia

Turkey Flat Vineyards 2017 Barossa Valley Rosé: Turkey Flat Vineyards has been making a rosé since 1994 which has since grown in popularity. The Panel enjoyed this Grenache based wine which was highlighted in the Summer issue of On the Vine. Rod adds, “This label has a fine track record and the latest vintage has all the attributes we enjoy in rosé. Light colour, freshness, cool in the mouth (low alcoholTurkey Flat Rosé), relatively dry and a stimulating finish, which endear it to light summer luncheon dishes. The presentation is snappy as well.”
