Small batch producer: Journey Wines from the Yarra Valley
Journey Wines’ winemaker is Damian North and is focused and passionate about sourcing wines from unique and suitable vineyard sites from the Upper Yarra (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) with the Shiraz from Heathcote in Central Victoria.
Have you noticed the label on Journey wines? We thinks it’s pretty unique but it also tells a story. The artist Shana James displays Damian’s journey into wine which is where the name came from.
Damian started the life in the world of wine as a sommelier and then studied winemaking at Charles Sturt University. After that, he moved to the Yarra Valley working as assistant winemaker at TarraWarra Estate for many years.
Damian loves Pinot Noir and loves working with it. And so, after some time in the Yarra, Damian went to state of Oregon, in the north west of America to immerse himself further into this fascinating and intriguing grape variety. His wife and two sons came too so it meant a change for the whole family!
They then headed to Margaret River where Damian became winemaker at Leeuwin Estate with the chance to then work with Chardonnay and gain further experience in winemaking.
Damian has always wanted to start his own label so it’s wonderful to see these fantastic wines produced by him sourced from the Yarra Valley and Heathcote. He makes the wines at the Medhurst winery in the Yarra.
His wines have won many accolades and praise from the wine trade. The 2015 Yarra Valley Chardonnay was given 96 points by James Halliday and was featured in Halliday Wine Companion 2018. The 2015 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir was awarded 95 points by Gourmet Traveller Wine, Dec/Jan 2017.
Damian’s full range includes:
