Small parcels at Swanny Cellars
At Swanny Cellars, we’re proud to be able to source and stock small parcels of premium wines. If you’re looking for family owned, boutique wines, then chances are; you’ll find them at the store.
This week (w.c 28th May) we bought a small quantity of two family owned wineries; Giaconda and Bindi, both from Victoria but about 260 kilometres apart.
Giaconda fruit is all hand-picked for the Chardonnay then lightly crushed and finally basket pressed before being added to French oak barrels, of which 30% are new (about) where fermentation takes place and ageing.
The red wines are whole bunch and de-stemmed and then the fruit is transferred to large concrete tanks for fermentation. In order to develop softer and finer tannins with more complexity, they remain on skins for an extended period. There follows basket pressing and then adding to French oak barrels (some are up to 40% new) for ageing.
We also were lucky to get hold of a small amount of Bindi wines, a boutique winery in the Macedon Ranges in Victoria. On the property, Chardonnay plantings make up 2 hectares while Pinot Noir plantings is 5 hectares. Annually the winery produces 1,800-3,000 dozen bottles with yields 1.5 to 2 tonnes per acre (3.5 to 5.0 tonnes per hectare). They really don’t produce much and what they do, is phenomenal.
