Wairau River Wines

While enjoying the sunshine and breathtaking scenery that New Zealand has to offer, Steve was able to also visit a number of wineries. Based in Marlborough, Wairau River Wines (pronounced why-row) is a truly family-owned and family-run business. Set up 40 years ago, in 1978 by Phil and Chris Rose, they now have 5 children who all are involved in the business; two of their sons are the viticulturist and winemaker while their daughter and partner manage the restaurant.

The winery is located at the north of the south island. Initially when they started the business, they supplied grapes for other producers before creating their own label in 1991. They now own and run 10 estate vineyards.

It was Steve’s first time in Marlborough and he enjoyed a fantastic lunch and tour of the winery. In his own words, “it is a lovely location with beautiful scenery set amongst the vineyards.” Steve was very impressed with how interesting Marlborough was as well as its beauty. From high up in the winery he had 360 degree views of the whole valley which was fantastic.

Visiting Wairau River Wines has other benefits too; Steve was able to taste wines that are not exported to Australia; Grüner Veltliner and Albariño. These are produced in small amounts and are very good. The Reserve Pinot and Reserve Chardonnay were of great quality too.

The tasting room is open 7 days a week from 10.00am – 4.30pm, closed Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
